Expert summary
Geology is a natural science which studies the Earth and its composite materials. The study of geology looks at what those materials are made of, what their structure is, and what processes are acting upon them. It also studies the organisms which inhabit the planet. Due to the age of the Earth, much of geology studies how these materials and organisms have changed over time. An important part of geology is the study of events such as landslides, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions and what has precipitated them in the past so we can predict future geological activity in order to avoid catastrophe. Another important part of recent geological work involves finding and assessing possible oil and gas reservoirs.
